Here's a few tips for general carving & care.
Why not try using an ice cream scoop to scoop out your pumpkin this year? It's larger & you can get more stuff out that way.
To make your pumpkin last longer, apply a light coating of petroleum jelly on the cuts. It will seal the wound and the pumpkin will last longer. After carving, place the pumpkin in a cool, dark place. It will spoil quickly if left at room temperature and will attract fruit flies.
Parents should supervise the cutting of the pumpkin. Also for a safe alternative to candles, try a glowstick. They illuminate the pumpkin wonderfully & there's no worrying about the candle flame going out or the general dangers of fire!
For something different this year, why not make a pumpkin planter ? Here's the easy steps to turn your pumpkin into a lovely autumn planter!
Pick a fairly large pumpkin. Should be about double the pot size you'll be using for the inside.
Cut stem & trace a 4-10" plastic pot on the top of the pumpkin with a marker.
Cut the top by tracing the markings with a knife & clean the inside out like you'd normally do. Don't forget to save the seeds for eating or planting.
Insert pot.
Add soil & plant. A mum would probably look the best in your new fall planter :-)!
